Molecular Biology of the Gene, 5th edition

http://90percenttrue.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/03/molbio.jpg

The long-awaited Fifth Edition of James D. Watson's classic text, Molecular Biology of the Gene, has been thoroughly revised and is published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Watson and Crick's paper on the structure of the DNA double-helix.
Though completely updated, the new edition retains the distinctive character of earlier editions that made it the most widely used book in molecular biology. Twenty-one concise chapters, co-authored by five highly respected molecular biologists, provide current, authoritative coverage of a fast-changing discipline. The completely new art is printed in full colour for the first time.
The book is divided into five parts. The first (Chemistry and Genetics) begins with an overview of molecular biology, placing the discipline in historical context and introducing the basic chemical concepts that underpin our description of molecular biology today. The second and third parts (Maintenance of the Genome and Expression of the Genome) form the heart of the book, describing in detail the basic mechanisms of DNA replication, transcription and translation. The fourth part of the book (Regulation) deals with how gene expression is regulated - from the examination of basic mechanisms that regulate gene expression in bacterial and eukaryotic systems, to a description of how regulation of gene expression lies at the heart of the process of development. Recent findings from sequencing whole genomes of several animals have revealed that they all share essentially the same genes. The last chapter in the regulation section looks at how changes in gene regulation can account for how different animals can be made up of the same genes. The final part of the book (Methods) deals with the techniques and methods used in molecular

Lisa Yount, "A to Z of Biologists"
Facts on File | 390 pages | PDF

A valuable volume in the Notable Scientists series, A to Z of Biologists uses the device of biography as a way to put a human face on science - a method that adds immediacy to the prose for the high schooler who might have an interest in pursuing a career in biology. This comprehensive survey features more than 180 entries and 50 black-and-white photographs. Each profile focuses on a particular biologist's research and contributions to the field and his or her effect on scientists whose work followed. Their lives and personalities are discussed as well through incidents, quotations, and photographs. Culturally inclusive and spanning the whole range of biologists from ancient times to the present day, the entries on women and minority biologists in particular articulate some of the obstacles that these biologists overcame in the process of reaching their goals. This volume is an ideal resource for students and general readers interested in the history of biology or the personal and professional lives of significant biologists.

Human Evolution: An Illustrated Introduction

http://molbiol.ru/forums/uploads/lit/Human_Evolution_An_Illustrated_Introduction_ed5.jpg

The brief length and focused coverage of Human Evolution: An Illustrated Introduction have made this best-selling textbook the ideal complement to any biology or anthropology course in which human evolution is taught. The text places human evolution in the context of humans as animals, while also showing the physical context of human evolution, including climate change and the impact of extinctions. Chapter introductions, numerous drawings and photographs, and an essential glossary all add to the accessibility of this text. The fifth edition has been thoroughly updated to include coverage of the latest discoveries and perspectives, including:

· New early hominid fossils from Africa and Georgia, and their implications
· New archaeological evidence from Africa on the origin of modern humans
· Updated coverage of prehistoric art, including new sites
· New perspectives on molecular evidence and their implications for human population history. --This text refers to the Paperback edition

About the Author
Roger Lewin is an Associate of the Peabody Museum at Harvard University. He is the author of several books on human-origin research, three of which he co-authored with world-famous anthropologist Richard Leakey, as well as the author of the prize-winning Bones of Contention.

The Physical Foundation of Protein Architecture (2002)

Description: A protein requires its own three-dimensional structure for its biological activity. If a chemical agent is added, the biological activity is lost, and the three-dimensional structure is destroyed to become a random coil state. But when the chemical agent is removed, the biological activity is recovered, implying that the random coil state turns back into the original complex structure spontaneously. This is an astonishing event. "The Physical Foundation of Protein Architecture" is intended to solve this mystery from the physicochemical basis by elucidating the mechanism of various processes in protein folding. The main features of protein folding are shown to be described by the island model with long range hydrophobic interaction which is capable of finding the specific residue, and the lampshade criterion for disulfide bonding. Various proteins with known structure are refolded, with the purpose of uncovering the mechanism of protein folding. In addition, ab initio method for predicting protein structure from its amino acid sequence is proposed.

Life The Science of Biology 7th Edition

Authoritative, thorough, and engaging, Life: The Science of Biology achieves an optimal balance of scholarship and teachability, never losing sight of either the science or the student. The first introductory text to present biological concepts through the research that revealed them, Life covers the full range of topics with an integrated experimental focus that flows naturally from the narrative. This approach helps to bring the drama of classic and cutting-edge research to the classroom—but always in the context of reinforcing core ideas and the innovative scientific thinking behind them. Students will experience biology not just as a litany of facts or a highlight reel of experiments, but as a rich, coherent discipline.
The new edition builds on Life's enduring strengths by doing what this acclaimed text has always done: combine a contemporary view of the discipline with innovative teaching and learning features. New chapters and essays, an enhanced art program, and standard-setting media and supplements combine to make this edition the finest yet. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.
